Scythe unveils Zipang CPU cooler with 140mm fan
Friday, January 25, 2008Scythe unveils Zipang CPU cooler with 140mm fan
Set on cooling the heck out of the little transistor colonies we call processors Scythe has now unveiled a brand new cooling solution, the Zipang. The cooler utilizes UPHC or Uneven Parallel Heatpipe Construction which takes the advantage of heatpipe attachment for both the top and the bottom portion of the heatsink fin, and, on top of that it features a nice 140mm fan to blow the heat out of the well... air.
The Zipang or SCZP-1000 is compatible with Intel Socket 478, 775 and AMD Socket 754, 939, 940 and AM2 motherboards and weights 815 grams. The bundled 140mm fan is certified to work at 1000 rpm when it has a noice output of 21 dBA and a top air flow of 51.82 CFM.
The Zipang has a suggested price tag of $58.00 or 44.95 euros (without VAT).

Nokia captures 40% of phone market, has new record quarter
Nokia captures 40% of phone market, has new record quarter
Finnish mobile magician, Nokia has now posted its latest quarterly results and it looks like it ended 2007 with a bang. In Q4 of last year Nokia's net sales topped 15.7 billion euros, up 34% over the 11.7 billion resulted in the same period of 2006.
The last three months of 2007 have seen 133.5 million Nokia mobile phones shipped, up 27% on year and enough to secure the company a 40% share in the mobile phone market, an increase of 1% on-quarter. That number not only puts Nokia way in front but it actually means that it shipped more units in Q4 than the next three vendors' shipment volumes combined. Better yet, the average selling price experienced during the quarter went up one Euro to reach 83 euros.
For 2008 Nokia is looking to increase its market share still by taking advantage of the growth of emerging markets where it is already doing quite good and has established a strong brand.

Apple applies to light up laptop touchpads, iPod clickwheels
Apple has touched on a new way to help you find your way around its products. The company has registered technology in the US that could see the iPod’s clickwheel or your MacBook Air’s touchpad light-up when you finger it.
The patent application, which was filed recently with the US Patent and Trademark Office, shows in block diagram form how the inclusion of a lighting mechanism would help guide users around a device by relating menu options to lighting changes. It's little like someone switching the hallway light on and off for every step you take up the stairs. View: The full story @ The Reg

Oh dear. It seems that data security blunders have hit a new and rather embarrassing low. Alongside drivers, benefit claimants and seemingly most of the UK population, now sexually diseased - sorry, sexually unabashed - citizens have found themselves exposed to the risk of ID fraud. Sneak has discovered that respondents to a confidential sexual health survey conducted by the Manchester Health Watchdog were all thanked for their participation, via a group email. Problem is that the watchdog forgot to conceal the addresses of those they were contacting, so everyone now knows everyone who took part. Terrible stuff, although quite what good the information would be to an ID fraudster Sneak is not sure, aside from blackmail. Nonetheless it has rattled those taking part. "It makes me wonder just how confidential the information they've collected really is and if it's even being protected at all. I'd urge people to think twice before participating in any online survey now," 21 year old linguistics student Christopher Garrett is reported as saying. Well, indeed Chris, especially a survey like that one. Oh dear. It seems that data security blunders have hit a new and rather embarrassing low. Alongside drivers, benefit claimants and seemingly most of the UK population, now sexually...

Futuremark launches 3DMark bang for buck meter
Futuremark launches 3DMark bang for buck meter
After a period of testing and tweaking 3DMark Next developer Futuremark has now announced the full release of the "Price and Performance Information Page." Available here at YouGamers.com, the new service is set to give you an idea of what components have the best bang for buck score and it is based on the not as accurate as you'd want 3DMark06 and CNET Shopper.
The service basically analyzes the user-submitted 3DMark06 scores and pairs the components tested with their current retail prices resulting in a 'score' which indicates how much performance you can get for your money. The charts include best graphics card, and single, dual- and quad-core processors.

Isaiah revealed: VIA’s new low-power architecture
January 23, 2008 - 11:01PM CT
By Jon Stokes
So much of the PC world’s coverage is focused on the horse race between Intel and its archrival AMD that we often forget about the other x86 processor company out there, the one that’s still well-known among the crowd of tweakers, hackers, and enthusiasts who build their own home firewall boxes and in-car PCs.
I’m talking, of course, about VIA, maker of the low-power, low-cost, and also relatively low-performance x86 processors at the heart of many special-purpose DIY boxes. VIA’s processors, designed by the company’s Centaur subsidiary, focus on keeping costs and power down at the expense of performance.
VIA’s newly launched processor architecture, known for the last three years by its codename, “Isaiah,” will keep the company’s focus on cost and power intact while taking things in a substantially different direction. In short, this year will see something truly odd happen on the low end of the x86 market: VIA and Intel will, architecturally speaking, switch places.
Intel will take a giant step down the power/performance ladder with the debut of Silverthorne/Diamondville, its first in-order x86 processor design since the original Pentium, while VIA will attempt to move up into Intel’s territory with its first-ever out-of-order, fully buzzword-compliant processor, Isaiah.
