The Netherlands makes big push towards open source

Probably angering the softest of the micros the Dutch government has decided that open sauce (source) has to be adopted by most of the state's organizations, and soon.

As the new project states, national level organizations will have to adopt open source software by April 2008 while local authorities will have the deadline extended to 2009. From those dates on the use of proprietary software will have to be justified as, of course, they require money from the national budget. By adopting open source software the government is hoping to cut a few of its expenses and reduce its dependency on certain companies (like Microsoft). Viva open sauce! read more
