Free utility condenses Windows Vista from 15GB to 1.4GB

Mozilla Ups Firefox Bug Threat, Slates Fix for Feb. 5

Mozilla Corp. bumped up the threat ranking for an unpatched Firefox bug to "high" Tuesday, but promised a fix is coming in Version 2.0.0.12, now slated for release on Feb. 5. The company's head of security, Window Snyder, confirmed that the browser, when running any of more than 600 add-ons, can be exploited to steal "session information, including session cookies and session history."

Snyder's acknowledgment followed an update by Gerry Eisenhaur, the researcher who first reported the Firefox problem. "There seems to be some confusion about what exactly the severity of this vulnerability is," Eisenhaur said on his hiredhacker.com blog. "This is not a chrome privilege escalation, but it [is] worse than just leaking some variables. I created another demo to read the sessionstore.js file. This will display information regarding your current session, [including] windows, tabs, cookies, etc."

Februray 1, 2007

TAKING ADVANTAGE of the green team’s recently announced 8800 SLI graphics card for notebooks, Rock has been beavering away to create a notebook that not only has dual-chip graphics, but a quad-core processor. Yes, the chassis is an absolutely behemoth and ugly as sin, saved only by its glossy black stylings. There’s no Penryn - this is old-school 65nm quad core, no less.

In fact, its an X6800 desktop chip, which harks back to the old Pentium 4 laptops of old. Buyers can also have the system outfitted with a pair of 500GB drives for a total of 1TB of storage. Optical duties are handled by an HD-DVD drive. The Rock Xtreme SL8, as it will be called, will be available in late February for between £2500 and £3000. If you’ve got the backbone to match your wallet size, then we wish you the utmost enjoyment. And we mean actual physical backbone - you’re going to need it to haul this thing anywhere.

Linspire to build Linux OSes just the way you want them

Fame and fortune seeker, Linspire together with free Linux software delivery service CNR.com have now announced their intention to launch a 'Pimp my OS' (operating system) program. The idea behind the program is to build Debian or Ubuntu-based custom desktop OSes based on what customers need and want.

"With desktop Linux, more and more partners are asking for customization so they can take control of the OS," stated Larry Kettler, President & CEO of Linspire, Inc. "This service will not only provide the feature sets they want, but cut the time it takes to get to market with their products, as well as greatly reduce the overall cost to deliver a custom desktop Linux operating system."

Based on an initial idea to make the release management process for Linspire's partners more resource efficient and less prone to defects, the Custom OS Build Service tool set will now provide the ability to quickly produce 'new' OSes, with customizable software stacks and features. Linspire has yet to announce when the program will become available but we're betting it won't be too long until we hear someone saying - "Thanks Linspire, for pimpin' my Linux." read more

Damaged Cable Disrupts Internet in the Middle East
A breakdown in an international undersea cable network disrupted Internet links to Egypt, India and Gulf Arab countries on Wednesday, and Egypt said it could take several days for its services to return to normal. It was not immediately possible to gauge the impact of the disruption on financial institutions. Egypt's telecoms ministry said 70 percent of the country's Internet network was down and India initially said it had lost over half its bandwidth. "This cut has affected Internet services in Egypt with a partial disruption of 70 percent of the network nationwide," the Egyptian ministry said in a statement. Residents of Gulf Arab countries also reported a slowdown in Internet connectivity.

The dual-slot, single fan beastie on the cards comes with the a few classic copper heatpipes and are said to lower the temperatures of the card's GPU by up to 8 degrees Celsius. Plus, it should be quieter too. Unfortunately though, no price tags for the new cards have been announced so we have to wait for them to hit the stores.

New Opera 9.5 build gets cloaking

New Opera 9.5 build gets cloaking
A brand new weekly has been released by the Opera Desktop Team and this time, it has brought forth for testing a new feature. Previously seen in classics like Predator 1 and 2 Opera's cloaking feature doesn't make the browser blend with the environment but it 'hides' the document.all file so as to not have certain websites provide the IE-oriented code to Opera 9.5 which is standard-compliant enough to render pages correctly. Most of the times.

All in all, the newly-released Opera 9.5 build comes with:

- Even more Gmail2 fixes, getting closer to working
- More presice rounding of HSL values in CSS
- Playing video on CNN works again
- Adding links to walls on Facebook now works
- Login to Open-Xchange now works
- Fixed various issues on Windows Live Mail
- Saving playlists on YouTube should now function correctly
- User style mode no longer applies to Mail or IRC tabs
- Several favicon fixes
- Fixed the line below dialog tabs in native skins
- Tweaking and improvements to Windows native skins (both themed and classic) based on feedback and bug reports
- Fixed a problem with wrong handling of some filetypes, including messed up display of MHTML
- Mac: Fixed color corruption when copying images (and preserve the alpha channel)
- Mac: Possibly fixed printing crashes on Leopard
- UNIX: Plugins in symlinked directories should now not be listed twice

The known issues of this version include:

- MIME type for executables is set to be handled by some plugin - change the configuration in your preferences to get this to work correctly
- Sparc builds will crash when initializing anything related to mail
- CPU usage will grow to 100% on UNIX when generating tooltips

To download the new build, for Windows, Mac OS or UNIX check out this page.

Nokia captures 40% of phone market, has new record quarter

Finnish mobile magician, Nokia has now posted its latest quarterly results and it looks like it ended 2007 with a bang. In Q4 of last year Nokia's net sales topped 15.7 billion euros, up 34% over the 11.7 billion resulted in the same period of 2006.

The last three months of 2007 have seen 133.5 million Nokia mobile phones shipped, up 27% on year and enough to secure the company a 40% share in the mobile phone market, an increase of 1% on-quarter. That number not only puts Nokia way in front but it actually means that it shipped more units in Q4 than the next three vendors' shipment volumes combined. Better yet, the average selling price experienced during the quarter went up one Euro to reach 83 euros.
