Amazon to acquire Audible for $300 million
By the second quarter of 2008, Amazon.com Incorporated plans to acquire Audible Incorporated, the leading online provider of premium digital spoken word audio content. Through its web sites in the US and UK and alliances in Germany and France, Audible.com offers over 80,000 programs, including digital audio editions of books, newspapers and magazines, television and radio programs and original programming. Under the terms of the agreement, Amazon.com will commence a cash tender offer to purchase all of the outstanding shares of Audible.com for $11.50 per share and will assume Audible.com's outstanding stock-based awards, for an aggregate transaction value of approximately $300 million.

Online merchant of common folks, Amazon.com has now announced that it will be buying Audible Inc., the company behind audiobook shop Audible.com. The acquisition is set to be worth about $300 million and consist of cash money and short-term investments and will provide Amazon.com with a bigger piece of the audio content market. Audible.com already offers over 80,000 programs, either 'classic' audiobooks or spoken-word audio content.
As planned Amazon will be paying $11.50 per Audible share and, if everything goes well, the deal will be closed by the end of Q1. read more

The idea behind the program is to build Debian or Ubuntu-based custom desktop OSes based on what customers need and want.
"With desktop Linux, more and more partners are asking for customization so they can take control of the OS," stated Larry Kettler, President & CEO of Linspire, Inc. "This service will not only provide the feature sets they want, but cut the time it takes to get to market with their products, as well as greatly reduce the overall cost to deliver a custom desktop Linux operating system."
Based on an initial idea to make the release management process for Linspire's partners more resource efficient and less prone to defects, the Custom OS Build Service tool set will now provide the ability to quickly produce 'new' OSes, with customizable software stacks and features. A breakdown in an international undersea cable network disrupted Internet links to Egypt, India and Gulf Arab countries on Wednesday, and Egypt said it could take several days for its services to return to normal. It was not immediately possible to gauge the impact of the disruption on financial institutions. Egypt's telecoms ministry said 70 percent of the country's Internet network was down and India initially said it had lost over half its bandwidth. "This cut has affected Internet services in Egypt with a partial disruption of 70 percent of the network nationwide," the Egyptian ministry said in a statement. Residents of Gulf Arab countries also reported a slowdown in Internet connectivity.

As promised, at least when it comes to the European release, Sony has unleashed the 3.90 firmware version for PlayStation Portable. The new firmware will enable owners of PSP-2000 handhelds to get acquainted and use Skype and chat for as long as the batteries hold up.
By using a headset and maybe a Go! Cam the PSP will become the Skype phone you never though of getting as you can always stop talking and start playing. In addition to Skype functionality the update will also add the Go! Messenger icon so as everyone knows it is inbound and will be live in March. The messenger is set to be available for all PSP models.

Sparkle puts new beefy cooler on GeForce 8800 GT cards
Sparkle has now pulled three new rabbits of the G92 breed out if its manufacturing facilities. The ravaging rabbits are actually GeForce 8800 GT cards with 256, 512MB and 1GB of memory, all at stock clocks but with a small twist.
With their GPU, shader and memory clocks set to 600 MHz, 1500 MHz and 1800 (1400 for the 256 MB version) MHz respectively Sparkle's products don't impress at all but what may lead you to search for one and eventually make a purchase is the cooling system.
The dual-slot, single fan beastie on the cards comes with the a few classic copper heatpipes and are said to lower the temperatures of the card's GPU by up to 8 degrees Celsius. Plus, it should be quieter too. Unfortunately though, no price tags for the new cards have been announced so we have to wait for them to hit the stores.

Nokia will make a public voluntary tender offer to acquire Trolltech, a recognized software provider with world-class software development platforms and frameworks headquartered in Oslo, Norway. Nokia will offer NOK 16 per share in cash and the board of directors of Trolltech has unanimously recommended that its shareholders accept Nokia's Offer. The acquisition of Trolltech, subject to customary closing conditions, will enable Nokia to accelerate its cross-platform software strategy for mobile devices and desktop applications, and develop its Internet services business. The offer is expected to be open for acceptance for a period of four weeks and to be completed in the second quarter of 2008.

NEC to release three new widescreen LCDs
Tokio-based NEC Corporation is now preparing to introduce three new LCD monitors in this seemingly-saturated display market. The models are the 17" LCD174WXM, the 19" LCD194WXM and 22" LCD224WXM, all set to be released this quarter, the first two as soon as Friday and the latter in March.
The first arrivals, the 17 and 19" models will both have a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels, two 1W speakers, a DVI and VGA connectors but are differentiated by the contrast ratio - 800:1 for the first and 1000:1 for the second.
The 22" display is set to have similar features with the 1000:1 contrast ratio but it has a 1680 x 1050 pixel resolution. The monitors' prices have not been announced but hopefully they'll be pretty competitive. read more

A brand new weekly has been released by the Opera Desktop Team and this time, it has brought forth for testing a new feature. Previously seen in classics like Predator 1 and 2 Opera's cloaking feature doesn't make the browser blend with the environment but it 'hides' the document.all file so as to not have certain websites provide the IE-oriented code to Opera 9.5 which is standard-compliant enough to render pages correctly. Most of the times.
All in all, the newly-released Opera 9.5 build comes with:

- More presice rounding of HSL values in CSS
- Playing video on CNN works again

Nokia captures 40% of phone market, has new record quarter
Finnish mobile magician, Nokia has now posted its latest quarterly results and it looks like it ended 2007 with a bang. In Q4 of last year Nokia's net sales topped 15.7 billion euros, up 34% over the 11.7 billion resulted in the same period of 2006.
The last three months of 2007 have seen 133.5 million Nokia mobile phones shipped, up 27% on year and enough to secure the company a 40% share in the mobile phone market, an increase of 1% on-quarter. That number not only puts Nokia way in front but it actually means that it shipped more units in Q4 than the next three vendors' shipment volumes combined. Better yet, the average selling price experienced during the quarter went up one Euro to reach 83 euros.
For 2008 Nokia is looking to increase its market share still by taking advantage of the growth of emerging markets where it is already doing quite good and has established a strong brand. read more

The Zipang or SCZP-1000 is compatible with Intel Socket 478, 775 and AMD Socket 754, 939, 940 and AM2 motherboards and weights 815 grams. The bundled 140mm fan is certified to work at 1000 rpm when it has a noice output of 21 dBA and a top air flow of 51.82 CFM.
The Zipang has a suggested price tag of $58.00 or 44.95 euros (without VAT).

$399 Everex CloudBook delayed
The Asus Eee PC is going to keep its Messianic feel for a few more weeks as Everex has announced that its $399 CloudBook, a sub-notebook that has been deemed as the first real rival for Asus' product, will have its release date pushed back.
Based on a VIA platform and embracing gOS as its free operating system the CloudBook was initially planned for a late January release in the US but now that's been put on hold for at least 4 weeks. The delay is due to some apparently much-needed gOS tweaks which hopefully will make the OS and system as cute and cuddly as the Eee PC.

Yahoo has been accused of favouring Microsoft over Open Sauce software on its Yahoo Answers service. Amanda Kerik responded to a problem that a user was having with their Windows machine that since they had to do a re-install they might as well install Ubuntu Linux.
She got a message back from Yahoo claiming that such a comment was in violation of its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. It deleted her answer and warned her not to post anything like that again.
The incident has created a bit of a stir after Kerik posted it on her bog and there are dark mutterings about a Yahoo boycott. According to Slated it is further proof that Yahoo is a bit too close to the Vole. It has previously supplied them with search and ad services and even if a merger is of the drawing board, it appears the two companies are working closely.
