SIM2 and Dolby start work on HDR-enabled LCD panels

SIM2 and Dolby start work on HDR-enabled LCD panels
Home theatre expert SIM2 Multimedia and Dolby Laboratories have announced that their are now working on developing a new prototype high dynamic range (HDR)-enabled LCD flat screen. Using Dolby’s new LED local dimming technology which hopefully isn't too similar to Samsung's own tech (we don't really need a new patent suit) the new panels provide some dramatically enhanced contrast ratios thus enabling picture quality that almost matches real-world visual perception of depth, detail, and color.

While Dolby comes with the technology SIM2 is set to offer the manufacturing reference designs. There's currently no estimate as to when we'll see TVs or any kind of screens using SIM2 and Dolby's panels.

VideoLan (VLC) 0.8.6d

VideoLAN is an excellent multimedia player with it's own plugins for playing different formats, so it doesn't need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Changelog:
This version is aimed at fixing security vulnerabilities in the Active X plugin and the Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) library which affect VLC media player 0.8.6c and lower. For more technical details see our ADVISORY (http://www.videolan.org/sa0703.html). Improvements in this release include better Video Output compatibility on Mac OS X and Apple Remote support on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Please note that Mac OS X 10.3.9 is no longer supported.

AMD tri-core Phenoms coming in February

AMD tri-core Phenoms coming in February
The Phenom launch may not have been great but AMD is promising bigger, better things for 2008 and one would be the release of triple-core processors. These CPUs are basically your average Agena quad-core part with one core disabled (read dead and gone) and should offer Intel's offer a run for its money. The tri-cored Phenoms codenamed Toliman are said to make their debut in February 2008 most likely after AMD releases the 9700 and 9900 quads.

The release of tri-core CPUs will see AMD have two products available, clocked at 2.5 and 2.3 GHz, each with their very own 89W TDP. Following these two processors, by the end of Q2 2008 AMD will release two dual-core Kuma processors which still don't have a determined clock. As for the competition, Intel will unleash its dual and quad-cored 45nm CPUs as soon as January.

Intel upgrades tools for Apple Leopard developers

Intel upgraded its software development tools for Apple's Mac OS X Leopard operating system, keeping a promise to Apple and pushing Mac applications to its brand new Penryn chips. Intel announced on Wednesday that the Intel Software Development Products for Mac OS X includes Version 10.1 of its C++ Compiler and Fortran Compiler. The tools have been optimized for Apple's Leopard and Xcode 3.0 development environment, which was launched last month, said James Reinders, a product evangelist at Intel. The tools, which also include libraries, have been upgraded to use features in Intel's latest 45-nanometer Penryn microprocessor, he added.

"We had the opportunity to update with some new enhancements to take better advantage of multicore, but the other big thing is Leopard," said Reinders. "We've got full support for 64 bit because Leopard added 64 bit top to bottom. We've had pretty good support before, but the release of Leopard and the update to our tools completes that picture, giving them an easier way to write programs."

Nintendo Wii and Brown Zune, best sellers on Cyber Monday

Following the grand results from Thanksgiving and Black Friday it is time to move forward in time space and money spending and talk about Cyber Monday. On this relatively ordinary day with a 'special name' the shops have again been assaulted by buyers and as always PriceGrabber was there to help people find what they want to get. According to the shopping service Cyber Monday saw its traffic increase by 54% over the corresponding day in 2006.

From what PriceGrabber recorded the best seller this past Monday was Nintendo's cute and cuddly console the Wii while second and third place in the sales charts were taken by Microsoft's Brown Zune and a Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive. While the Wii was expected to be that popular on Cyber Monday the Brown Zune's second place is a little surprising given the fact that the second-gen Zunes have already been released and, let's face it, it isn't the prettiest of the 30G Zunes. Still, price was the key word here and it seems Microsoft's tactic managed to convince a lot of people into buying the first-gen Zune stock still available. read more

Asus expects to sell 5 million Eee PCs in 2008

Asus is selling about 20,000 Eee PCs per month already but it is next year that the company expect the low-cost laptop to really pick up and do better than previously expected. The 3 million sold Eee PCs prediction for 2008 has now been scrapped by the Taiwanese company and it has been replaced the even, round number that is 5 million.

Next year the Eee PC will be released in more than 10 Asian countries and will get a boost in power courtesy of the 8G model. The sweet smell of success is in the air tonight.

Chaintech intros new cooling system for the latest Apogee GT memory

Chaintech intros new cooling system for the latest Apogee GT memory
To better cool off the hot heads of its latest DDR3 babies, the Apogee GT DDR3 1800MHz modules, Walton Chaintech (Chaintech for short) has introduced Cool It Smart. This new heatsink system, which comes in the deluxe package of the Apogee memory and is said to increase cooling efficiency by 50% consists of a quite large heatsink equipped with two small and possibly pretty loud cooling fans.

The testing done by Chaintech in a room at 23°C revealed that the DDR3-1800 memory without a heatsink reached 73°C while with the Cool It Smart system it only went up to 52°C (without the fans) and 38°C (with the two fans running). Cool It Smart is 'looking' good when it comes to temps but it would be nice to see how well it performs against Corsair's Dominator cooler.

Debitel offers 600 euro sign bonus with its iPhone plan

One company's anger management issue is another company's bread and butter and that's more or less the case in Germany with T-Mobile and Debitel. T-Mobile, after being ordered by a German court to start selling iPhones without the two-year plan has decided to 'comply' by putting a 999 euros price tan on Apple's little device when sold alone. Since the price would make it quite unappealing mobile service provider Debitel AG has decided to fix things a little. Its solution is to offer 600 euros as a bonus to those iPhone users sign-up with Debitel thus relatively negating the 600 euro difference between T-Mobile's plan/no plan iPhone. read more

Red Hat is opening the beta of its on-demand Enterprise Linux, hosted on Amazon’s internet computing service. The oafishly named Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) lets subscribers run applications certified for RHEL on Amazon’s utility computing data center - the theory being that customers lacking the server space can place their applications unto Amazon’s hardware, and dial up more capacity when needed.

As for pricing, subscriptions to the beta are $19 per month, per account for access to support and services. Once signed on, customers can start server instances on Amazon EC2 — which charges $0.21 to $0.94 per hour, depending on the extent of use. Data transfers in will cost an additional $0.11 per GB, and data transfers out cost $0.19 per GB.

Atari's UK branch not affected by US problems

Sunday, November 25, 2007

Atari has been in trouble for quite some time but not every part of it has reached rock bottom. While in the US Atari is looked upon with as a company that's taking its last breaths in the UK there's a different story.

According to the master of PR in Atari's UK office, Lee Kirton, the branch was doing quite well lately and is enjoying good sales on the recently-released titles, like The Witcher. The game sold over 11,000 copies and it given it is a new IP this makes for a promising future. Whether this is just very optimistic PR or simply a sign the company will get back on its feet it remains to be seen. Let's hope the upcoming Alone in the Dark game will make a very significant sales splash. read more
