Big spender search giant Google has now officially released OpenSocial, a platform that is set to help the development of applications (widgets and more) for social websites. According to Google this is the "first time that multiple social networks have been made accessible under a common API to make development and distribution easier and more efficient for developers."
Although young and unexperienced OpenSocial has made quite a lot of friends and it is already supported by MySpace, hi5, Bebo, Friendster, LinkedIn, Engage.com, Oracle, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, iLike and more. Also, several developers, including Flixster, FotoFlexer, iLike, RockYou, Slide, Theikos, and VirtualTourist have already built applications that use the OpenSocial APIs to start things up.
Although there have been rumors that MySpace will be inspired by Facebook and establish its own platform, the News Corp-owned site was in the end convinced by the G-Men to join the OpenSocial cause.
